Absolutely not so! IMHO it's MORE important because more of the picture area will be out of focus. Examples: I've seen photos made with a 500mm+ refractive lens from a well-known manufacturer (starts with P) that looked like it was made with a mirror lens: ugly donut-shaped highlights except toward the edges where they were creschent moon highlights. Likewise a brand-C 100-400 zoom gives similar results. The 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt and the older 560mm f/5.6 and 280mm f/4.8 Telyts give very pleasing bokeh. For the kind of photos I like to make it's a very important property and MTF curves don't tell me anything about it.
