Subject: [Leica] 35mm normal vs. ASPH or aspherical lens

I suppose it's a matter of taste, but I sure don't see anything "harsh"
about that bokeh.

Just to put some pictures where our mouths are. . .

Here's the 4th Gen. 35/2 Summicron at f/2:

Here's the same scene with a 35/1.4 Summilux ASPH:
http://users.2alpha.com/~pklein/currentpics/PaulChun00.htm

Here's another scene with the Summicron, probably at f/2.8 or f/4:
http://users.2alpha.com/~pklein/currentpics/mischabutter.jpg

And another with the Summilux ASPH at f/1.7:
http://users.2alpha.com/~pklein/musicians/AngieNickClaire.htm

The Summilux ASPH bokeh is indeed harsher, but the in-focus stuff is
unbelievably good wide open. The classic Summicron is a touch soft at
f/2, but perfectly usable. Either lens is superb at f/2.8 or smaller,
but the ASPH lens has a bit harsher bokeh. The ASPH's harshness seems
to diminish as you stop down, but it's still there.

The 35 Summicron ASPH's "look" is very similar to the 35/1.4, just one
stop less.
