Neil -

The "innocent error" clause is referring to innocent errors in registering
the copyright for your own work. Photographers who have sued for copyright
infringement when their photos have been used without permission have had
the case dismissed because of slight technical errors in their copyright
registration forms - which can be confusing when determining whether works
have been published and the exact date of publication. It has nothing to
do with "innocently" copying other works. In fact, Corbis and Getty are
more likely to be sued, and have been, for having successful photographers'
styles copied exactly by photographers who are willing to give their rights
away to the big guys.
