Subject: [Leica] How did Richard Avedon work?

I was looking at the partial last portfolio that was published in the
most recent New Yorker and found myself wondering how Avedon worked.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I'm assuming that he engage his subjects but did he shoot a lot? How
did he choose to work with his subjects.
