Have a look at the Photoshop CS Basic Image Enhancement Student Manual  
(Level 1) by Gary Young and Kevin Ogburn, published by Element K  
Courseware. 
Step-by-step instructions with a corresponding CD. Easy enough  even for a 
grown-up 
to follow. Ought to be a breeze for a child of the  computer generation.
