The low end Mercs are Sindelfingen cars, perhaps there
are some engine crossover parts. I am told by people I
know at Merc that they are spending more on marketing
and less on engineering these days. Apparently
customers are easily impressed by image but most don't
notice better engineering. Much of their competition
has become very profitable by following that route. As
a long term Merc user I am of the clear opinion that
this is evident in the cars, which are inferior to the
older ones.
Did they learn cheap production techniques from
Chrysler? I don't know but I have probably bought my
last Mercedes.
I have been looking for a new car for 18 months -
can't find one I like which is fair value.
