The F? A hefty beast? Maybe I'm too used to modern iterations of all
these cameras, but I'll be surprised to learn that the original F - not
the FTn - is significantly (as in noticeably when held in the hands)
heavier than an M.

And btw, people who pick up one of my M6s with a Summilux 35 ASPH
mounted on it invariably comment on how "heavy" it is. I don't say this
as a criticism, because it's never been an issue for me. But I will say
that neither have I ever thought of the M6 as being a "light" camera.
Metal is heavy. Plastic is light. ;-)

I agree w/the speculation that continued RF
competition would have forced Leica to be more
innovative (the M3 could be considered Leitz's
response to the Contax II), but beg to differ re: the
weight of Contax & Nikon RFs. I've never held an SP
or S3, given they've become holy relics for
collectors, but I don't believe the Contax IIa (or
even IIIa), Nikon S2, or Canon P are heavier than the
M3 or M2. I don't have a scale in front of me, but I
think the IIa & S2 are actually a bit lighter than
their M contemporaries. The Contax II is heavier than
the IIa, but still weighs about the same as an M3.

If you were referring to the original Nikon F or
Contarex SLRs, I agree that those are hefty beasts . .
.

I was brought up on Contax RF cameras. They are truly
great. But I do
agree with the theory that Leica would have had to
perform to a much
higher
standard, if there were real competition out there for
the past 40 or
so
years ( since the Nikon SP died.) The lenses are not
the issue here,
it is
the body.

Nikon and Contax made really heavy cameras. The Leica
were much
lighter.
Nikon and for that matter, Canon, were real innovators
in the last
years of
RF life. Competition spices it up for all of us. But
the reality is
that
Leica IS the only choice now, for all practical
pupposes. Hexar,
Cosina,
Nikon ( S3), and Contax are really only skimming the
market of Leica.
