Thanks to you Luis and Phong, for your responses. The monk indeed had a 
cigarette in his hand -- cigarettes were ubiquitous in Thailand, including 
in my own pocket, at the time. And Phong, I am awaiting your photoessay, 
Rice and Rain (your title).
