Rich is generally not in the little shop before early
afternoon. He's the proverbial night owl in a city
that never sleeps.

As for B&H and its security, given that this is a
store owned and largely staffed by orthodox Jews in
post 9/11 Manhattan, the safety measures are fully
understandable to me.

If the world was to have only one photo store, my
choice would be B&H. Very good staff, best selection
of new gear that is available to try & play with on
site, excellent used selection (including an always
interesting Leica section), prices often much better
than most. I love the place.
