Le Mans is a strange race. Until a few years ago it was usually won by
Porsche who competed every year on a limited budget but high level of
expertise. Every now and again a large manufacturer would decide it
would be good for marketing to win Le Mans. It usually took a lot of
time and huge financial resources to succeed, but once they had
committed they usually had to win. Lots have done it, Ford (who
actually started the programme by rebadging the Lola GT), Renault,
Mazda, Audi etc.
