My father used to tell me about the old-time news photographers who had 
a callous running the length of their finger because instead of turning 
the film advance on their Leica with their thumb and finger, they'd 
simply drag their finger across the knob....... a very quick way of 
advancing the film. The Leica was smooth enough to do that. It works but 
I can see why a callous would form. The knurles on the knob are rough!
