I can't speak to the DVD-writing issue, but ACDSee makes it about as easy 
to create a standalone (exe file) slide show as you could ever want.  Looks 
good, too.  It can also create a really nice-looking HTML album of your 
faves that you could post on your own web page or put on a CD.  Takes only 
seconds and the results are impressive.

Thanks to Nathan for recommending this software.  (It was Nathan, wasn't it?)
