Certainly there are any number of fabulous writers working today. But "serious" writers have always been a tiny minority even of those who work with the written word. I'm also not even referring to the ratio of poor writing to serious and fine writing. What I was initially pointing out is the marked decline in the quality of what I'll call 'functional writing,' that is, general written communication between individuals; business writing; the ability of the average, high school or college grad to express themselves clearly and reasonably cleanly in written language - as compared to the ability of members of the same groups to do so at mid-century. Do you mean to imply that serious writers today don't write as well as days gone by? Or do you mean to imply that the ratio of poor writing has increased in relationship to serious and fine writing?
