As far as I know the R lens does its tricks without aspherical surfaces or
floating elements.  Not having used one I can only repeat what I've heard,
that optical performance of the new lens far outstrips that of the lens it
replaced, particularly at the wider apertures.  Whether you'll make better
pictures or not I can't say ;-)
