They have to be in place, for moral grounding.
A very interesting piece of acting, in the Seventh Seal, has the knight
grappling on how to untangle himself from the Devil's grip, as he's playing
chess. He comes upon an insight from the knight/bishop combination. Well, in
our case we use the old tried and true mendicant /knight combination. No
one's fooled, except maybe for the hapless mendicant, but all play their
part.
