That's what I did. The Pentagon made a gaff that ended up being a loophole. 
To avoid someone being 1A for year after year after year, they said that if 
you aren't called during the current year, you would become 4-something 
that would only make you eligible in the event of major war. So, I gave up 
my 2S deferrment on December 31st at about 3:00 PM. The next day, I was 
4-something. Cost me $30 to have the lawyer fill out the paperwork.
