I realize that an online debate isn't going to change anybody's mind. So I realize that I'm typing just to see myself type. So with that in mind... :) My wife has asthma. She didn't used to have it. She wasn't born with it. (She may have had a genetic predisposition toward it. Who knows?) She developed it during her childhood. The doctors told her it was most like smoke-induced asthma. Her late father smoked heavily. She's actually somewhat allergic to cigarette smoke now. Just a little bit can cause her to feel like she can't breathe. If I've been out with friends who smoke or in a smoke-filled bar, I have to strip when I come home, toss my clothes in the washer, and shower. She can't stand the lingering smell of smoke on my clothes. So I usually avoid those situations. Nobody can say for sure if her condition was caused by living in a house with a smoker. They can't say it wasn't, either. After especially severe asthma attacks, she'll often mutter, "Thanks, Dad!" On the other hand, life is weird. Maybe her asthma stopped her from doing something that would have been worse for her. So it could be a blessing. :) I suspect that her dad would think twice about smoking around her if he had it to do over. -- Eric http://canid.com/
