To spell it out: Mark is including "us" in the hopes that the prospect of infamy in this community will persuade the seller to do right.  The "service" he is doing us is re-affirming that the norms of this community have some weight.  If this community can count on a certain minimum of civilized behavior (no lying, no stealing, keeping promises etc.) we all benefit.  I put service in scare-quotes because it isn't really a service, it is a valid, and I think creative, use of comminity pressure to enforce norms I think we would all like to live by.  I agree with Joe L.  this sounds like a last resort.  Assuming that Mark's facts are all true (we only have one side of the story) I hope the seller does the right thing and that we never have to learn his/her name.
