My pc is not that well equipped - its a 2 ghz with one Giga ram and a
couple of standard 80 gb disks

anyway I tried running two 100 mb pictures trough photomerge - it is not
quick but it worked in 8 bit

It did not use all that much processor but allocated 8-900 mb ram ( you
can follow the processor and ram usage by pressing alt ctr del )

Have you checked your systemsettings in
controlpanel>>system>>advanced>>perfomance>>virtual memory and memory usage
(if the path is not excatly the same on your pc its because I am on a
danish version of WIN XP)

Hope it works out for you - it sounds like you have invested in a real
good machine - a funny thing though with photoshop is that my old twin
processor 300 mhz pentium II with only ½ gig ram works faster on some
photoshop tasks then my 2 ghz 1 giga ram does! - the photoshop CS is
rather new so perhaps it will come in the next online fix/download form
adobe

I've changed the PS dedicated RAM settings from a minimum of 25 percent to 100 percent, and everything in between. PS responds best in this specific instance with the dedicated RAM being set at 50 percent; all the other higher and lower settings result in the dreaded PS "out of memory" message.
