Open the back and place it on the film path, close the back, and fire the shutter. As mentioned by others, at slow speeds the CLE reads off the film plane, rather than the dappled curtains, and the piece of paper approximates the reflectance of film. Without it the shutter speeds are too slow as the meter is reading the blackness of the pressure plate. Enjoy the CLE - it is a great little camera.
