With PayPal, at least you know who has the number. If you give your number to a sleazy camera store, what's to prevent them from selling it to Lyndon Larouche or some other scam artist. (Admittedly you might not trust PayPal, but that's a different matter). I think the answer is to deal only with people you trusty.
