The factory says give it a jolt, and if that doesn't cure it, throw it away! (The jolt didn't cure it!) I don't have need for a 4000dpi scanner, as I only scan for the web and for the occasional 4x6 print. The new Minolta Dimage Dual Scan III looks interesting and is a price my budget will stand.
