Has it had a recent CLA? Older lubricants, especially as they age, are 
more likely to stiffen up and cause the the troubles you are having. 
Some modern lubricants (it all depends on how they are formulated) are 
stable over a wide range of temperatures and would solve your problem. 
If you do send it out for a CLA, make sure you tell your tech that you 
would like it to work in colder temps too.

Try leaving your jacket partly open with the camera against your body 
and the lens out in the cold. This will keep the camera a little warmer 
but still not cause condensation problems on the lens.
