Subject: [Leica] digilux2: view from a curmudgeonly luddite

i was in bergen county camera last night and tom thrust out a digilux 2
for me to look at. to cut to the chase, even as a rabidly anti-digital
zealot, and even with it's 2K pricetag, i'm quite impressed.

of course it's a great-looking camera, but what i really liked was the
completely intuitive placement of zoom, focus, aperture and shutter
controls and the substantial feel imparted to the user. the internal
digital viewfinder was fascinating, although due to time sampling , it
sometimes looked like a mpg video over a 56K phone line. i immediately
turned off the display on the back (i HATE those things) and used the
viewfinder display (which you can use to view all your images). in
manual focus mode, when you touched the focus ring, the focus patch
automatically expanded to give a high-resolution view of the center part of
the image, and then dissapeared when you stopped focusing. nice. though i
don't like flash as a general rule, the flash is pretty cool, it pops up for
direct and bounce use. autofocusing seemed quiet, quick and accurate.

given the opportunity, i'd definitely try out the digilux 2 over a weekend.
i think they've got a product simultaneously innovative and retro, and
exudes quality. if they substituted a F0.25 or F0.35 12.5mm prime lens,
i would probably have to own one.
