The book is "Spangle" by Gary Jennings. It is the story of a small 19th century circus in the U.S. that eventually becomes one of the biggest attractions in Europe. What Michiel has show appears in the apparently well-researched novel - the raising of the tent, the traveling, the versatility of the members of the troupe. At more than 800 pages, it's a good vacation read (but be aware that there are some steamy sections).
