And, for that use (the cover of a model railroading magazine), the "fakery" 
is just fine.  In fact it's pretty cool (great final shot, BTW).  It isn't 
fooling anyone.  Every modeller that looks at it knows that the sky is fake. 
  Not because it looks fake, but because you'd never get that sky with a 
model train...

OTOH, modelling in and of itself is "fakery", isn't it?  It's trying to get 
something really really small to look as much as the original as possible.  
I marvel at the lengths (look at the dirt streaks on those cars!) that 
modellers go to, and as that photo shows, how effectively realistic they 
are.

I guess my point (do I really have one?) is that in large part, the ethics 
of foto fakery (photo phakery?) depends in large part on the audience, and 
their expectations.
