See Barbara Tuchman's magisterial STILWELL AND THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN CHINA for discussion. Stilwell is a fascinating chap. His two greatest boosters in the Army were Douglas MacArthur and George C Marshall, both of whom Stilwell, unique in the Army, called by their first names. Stilwell was wasted in China: it was Marshall's original intention to give him command of TORCH, and a European command headed by Stilwell would undoubtedly have been a bit crisper and less conflicted than it was under Eisenhower. Stilwell, also, ranks with McClellan as the greatest trainers the US Army has ever had.
