Unfortunately, Photoshop can't create layers on a 16-bit/channel
(48-bit RGB) image. Global adjustments with curves and levels must
therefore be made on the original (I save a copy of the raw scan, in
fact several copies at various stages, and I save out my levels and
curves so I can remember what I did. Of course I also have to keep
buying more and/or bigger hard drives!) Layers for 16/48-bit images
would be a nice feature in PS 8, but then I'm _really_ going to need a
fast G5 :)
