Subject: [Leica] OT: North American Blackout

So, how did everyone get through the Big Blackout of '03? In case
there's someone who hasn't heard, a huge power outtage hit North
America, from the Carolinas in the USA, up the eastern seaboard and into
much of Ontario, Canada, Thursday afternoon. Literally tens of millions
without power for up to 24 hours or more.

I was without power for over 24 hours, and was stuck with about $5 in my
pocket, and no working bank machines, debit cards or credit cards - and
almost no food in the house.

Ended up on the patio of a friend's cafe, drinking beer and eating
barbequed burgers by candlelight. It was very strange walking home at
midnight by moonlight - and there were more stars in the sky than
Toronto's seen in 100 years without light pollution! Very cool!

I think pretty much all of Toronto now has power back (may be a few
pockets without), but it's kind of scary to realize how much we depend
on electricity. Also neat to see how friendly everyone seemed to
become, after being reduced to the same level, if you know what I mean.

Hope everyone got through this okay.

regards,
frank
