Here truly is the nub of the matter, and to fix this, buy quality. Your camera store will try to sell you a cheap reel for $4 or so. Invest $15 in a King Concept (aka, Hewes) reel, and all will be fixed. The cheap reels are constantly bending and twisting and doing other nasty things which make their use most frustrating. The King Concept reels are REALLY heavy duty and loading them is a dream. The old Nikkor reels are equally fine but the Nikkor tanks are not recommended. I use nothing but Hewes or Nikkor reels and Kindermann tanks. I've not had a misfeed since I started using these reels at the advice of Ctein as given in an article in the late and lamented CAMERA AND DARKROOM magazine. Buy cheap, get cheap. Invest the extra dollars and your future is assured!
