It shows how much film needs to be in the spool and most importantly, the position of the opening when loading. Looking down on the bottom of the camera, the spool opening should be at the nine o'clock position and film should be around the four o'clock position. You don't have to be too exact. If you put too much film into the spool, it will tighten up The next thing, did you install the spacer on the base plate? This is more important, then it seems. I have used these thing for years and never had a problem. For any M3 users out there, the rapid load take-up spool has a loose center core tube. This tube is to allow you to move the spool a little to reset the M3's frame counter.
