As one who defends digital, Randy, I'd have to say that this does NOT
look like a scanned negative. I scan negatives, and this is no scanned
negative. First off, NO grain. Second, the tonality suggests a color
digital file converted to black and white. Black and white digital just
isn't up to film - yet.

I guessed that too, but I knew I could have been wrong. It could easily
be a scanned negative. We're not seeing it with any kind of real
resolution, are we?

Quick, listen to this 8 bit mono recording (so the file's not to big).
Was it recorded on a Neve Tube console? Yamaha digital? QUICK -- TELL
ME!!! You CAN'T!

Yup. I guessed digital, and see I guessed correctly. Digital B&W looks
good, but it doesn't look quite "right." Something different about the
tonality.

Here is a good example: can you tell if this is film or digital?

Bob Haight wrote...

Yeah, digital is great is you like blown out
highlights or dark low values.

I could say precisely the same thing about slide film, Bob - But instead
I'll say learn something about the media you're shooting and learn to
use a light meter - and it won't be a problem. ;-)
