The reality, however, remains that Collins was so described by Trotsky and,
later, by Tito.  And, yes, the study of the IRA campaign against the
British was made the core of the insurgency school conducted by the Soviets
and attended by such worthies as Ho, Mao, and Tito.

You are correct to note that the Soviets continued to back Chiang even
after Marshall had effectively ended US support for the KMT government.
However, the Soviets played both sides against the middle, and Mao's guys
received significant support from the Soviets beginning in 1925.  Chiang,
after all, had also attended the same school which Ho, Mao, and Tito attended.
