Lagavulin is the more civilized of the two. The more refined.
Laphroaig is more untamed, although it should be said that it comes in
many variations (I'm primarily speaking of the 10 yo). Both are Islay
malts and have that distinctive smokey Islay taste. I like both a
great deal, but probably for slightly different occasions. I started
out drinking single malts by drinking the 10 yo Laphroaigh, so it has a
special place in my heart. Lagavulin is probably the more gentle
introduction to Islay malts of the two.
