Can't resist responding. While spending May in Paris I learnt to drink Lagavulin. Inspired by reading a famous English crime novelist whose detective drinks Laphroig, I went to the liquor store "du quartier" and, after looking at the various labels of single malt whiskeys, was steered by the assistant from Laphroig to Lagavulin. As the latter was much more expensive I figured ya gets what ya pays for. Back at the flat my first sip of the peaty and smokey Lagavulin made me feel at first as if someone had dissolved a Cuban cigar in the bottle. But then I really got to like it. As I've never tried a single malt before, did I make the right choice? I thought of taking a couple of bottles back with me to Bangkok but then realized that it wasn't likely to taste good in the heat of the tropics: you'd have to chill it to get a room temperature of 20°C; the same way as a good Bordeaux just doesn't taste good in the heat.
