One crucual benefit of Photoshop is that you can
learn and build upon other people's experiences.
There's a vast amount of literature available,
as well as plugins, actions, etc.

At least Photoshop is not a Microsoft product.

I just ran across this and thought it might be of interest to some people.

There is a windows port of GIMP the GNU Image Editor. It can do most
of the things that Photoshop can and its free.

http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/ has the files to download. You
must install gtk+-1.3.0-20030216-setup.zip
<ftp://ftp.arnes.si/software/gimp-win/gtk+-1.3.0-20030216-setup.zip> and
then gimp-1.2.4-20030213-setup.zip
<ftp://ftp.arnes.si/software/gimp-win/gimp-1.2.4-20030213-setup.zip> .

I was playing around with 1.3 when I had Linux installed it had some
extemely inventive tools so when 1.4(stable) comes out...
