G'day all,
some of you must be up very late!!! The discussion on wide zooms led me to
tell you about my latest. George talked me into getting a new wide for the
R8 and the X-pan in preparation for the trip to Antelope canyon. Whilst in
Page, we were also to go to Horseshoe bend. I had seen images of this
'twist' in the river, and was certain that my new 30mm X-pan lens would be
perfect.

Well, there is wide and there is wider, and the X-pan is certainly in the
later category BUT 30mm is not all that wide in 35 format and the lens would
not cover the full height of the massive sandstone pillar, around which the
river flows. Fortunately I had the R8 on "stand-by" and the 15mm super Elmar
once again 'saved' my ass. I returned later with b/w film in the R8 to
complete the job with the 21-35mm --- 21 just covers the whole scene, and I
saw more than a few sad Canon and Nikon users up on that precipatous ledge
with their 'wide' 24's ;-)

I did try patchworking the scene with the D'lux, but really, I can't be
bothered with all that photoshop stitching and streching. So beware, you
need 21 or wider to capture the whole scene and its a reasonable hike to get
there.

Cheers

Alastair Firkin @ work ;-)
