Well, yes, you and I would rather do that, but you and I aren't running 
the magazines, are we? :-).

I've talked to a number of magazine editors about this, and there is 
another magazine cultural issue that is a factor here. It is a tradition 
at many magazines for a number of editors to gather around a light box 
and discuss and select key photos, especially cover photos. When a 
digital photo is emailed or otherwise selected via a private web site, 
or whatever, some of these other editors are cut out of the process. 
That goes against the magazine's cultural grain and is being resisted 
for obvious reasons by those being cut out of the loop.

It is not so simple as technology.
