The problem with this strategy is that there are situations where AF fails
or is less than optimum.  For example birds flying against a varied
background - AF sometimes gets confused when the backgorund changes.  To get
around this one must pre-set limits for the AF system, where the background
is beyond the far limit and the bird is not.  Even where AF works reasonably
well, many experienced bird photographers will use AF for rough focus and
will fine-tune the focus manually.
