I've used very small (round) split-rings.  Smaller than the ones that come 
with most straps.  Thus you can utilize the fabric of the strap as it's own 
cushion.

Caveat: They're hard (but not impossible) to find.  Our local camera store 
found several boxes of original Pentax straps from the early 1970's and are 
selling them for Cdn$ 2.00 ea.  I throw the straps away, but keep the 
rings.  Work perfectly!
