Kit,

The solution is obvious--the Voigtländer line made by Cosina. The
top-of-the-line body, the Bessa R2, is an excellent camera (I have one
as my third M body), and there are no issues around Leica lens
compatibility as has been reported by some for the Konica Hexar. The
Voigtländer lenses are also, to paraphrase Erwin Puts, "astounding value
for money" and fully on par with all but the latest Leica lenses. Your
student friend can buy a new Bessa R2 outfit with two lenses for the
price of a used 35mm Summicron.
