Actually, Leica did some 'copying' of Tom's winder; it is basically
very close to Tom's, with the same kind of belt drive, but with the
addition of some gears to get the height down. The extra gears, and a
couple of other design modifications that allow easier penetration of
dirt would seem to reduce the durability of the Leica design vis a
vis Tom's.
