What gets me going is everything surrounding the kind of consciousness
she, and her ilk, displayed. It was used during the late 60's and 70',
etc., as an academic barrier. Unless a photographer could regurgitate
the arcana of referential points from their canons, in their graduate
school applications, they didn't get in. I should preface that my
references are for California. I never bothered applying, but I had
plenty of friends, and academic acquaintances, who gave me the sordid details.
It's ironic that I'm currently teaching photography in a fine art dept.
I preamble the beginning of the classes that this is an applied
technical course, and that I will not be teaching the fine art drivel of
going "outside the box." They have to give me everything teachable
within the 3 1/2 month from the insides of that photographic box.
In my case, at the time of her initial cultic popularity, I was working
on a degree in Religious Studies. I was more prone to walk around with a
copy of the Chuang Tzu, or Plotinus. I did read A.D. Coleman and the
like, but only sparingly. As Earl Butz once said,"...he don't' play the
game, he don't make the rules." That's how I feel about photography/art
critics. They don't take the pictures, they ain't got squat to say about it.
