Subject: Re: [Leica] Tri Elmar Repair

Someone I know with fairly close ties to Leica had a
3E that simply fell apart after about 6 months. The
story goes that Leica decided that it was not
repairable, and that it would be replaced. Only
problem was that production is only done in batches,
and he would have to wait until it was restarted
(about a month), because the two staff who knew how to
make a 3E were on holiday. When production was
restarted, he had the first example made. Serial
number was 49 higher than the lens it replaced, which
had been made over half a year earlier.
All of which shows the rarity of the lens, and even
more so of the skill and knowledge required to fix it.
The chances of anyone in any export market, even the
US, having the ability to repair such a lens are on
the anorexic side of slim.
