Greg,

The 280 with the  1.4x extender (= 400 f/4) is my standard kit when
using a monopod  in the field for birds.  I've seen no problems that can
be attributed to the equipment.

As for compatibility of the 1.4x extender with other lenses, the Leica
Handbook lists the following:
180 f/2 APO
280 f/4 APO
105-280 f/4.2
and the modular APO Telyt-R lenses
