Yes, well, that was the problem. I was in auto mode. I probably should have
noticed the entire display was flashing. :) But I got your point and don't
disagree. Although I must admit I was using a light meter earlier in the
day.

Ouch!  :)

BTW, I have started assisting  a wedding photographer. So, one day my photos
will improve. (I hope.)
