You want them just lightly clicking as you go down the road. A little sideways slip and they bite right in. Here is a site with instructions on how to make your own: http://www.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/ebc/winter.htm#studs Here is a site with commercial studded tires (copy and paste): http://www.mec.ca/Products/ product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=483885&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=491 231&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=491325&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=491293&FOLDER%3 C%3EbrowsePath=491367&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=491255&bmUID=1037993543464 You then have more traction than the cars. Track standing on sheet ice is so cool! I have gone around sheet ice corners at a 45 degree lean angle with just a touch of oversteer; a religious experience I assure you.
