Am I right or it all depends? I have heard that the 85/1.9 lens (either Serena or Canon) is poor in optical performance as the 50/1.2. While I haven't done rigorous side-by-side comparisons, I regularly shoot with Canon (or the earlier Serenar) rangefinder lenses on my M and screwmount cameras. Since we seem to be discussing teles, I'll confine myself to the 85mm f2 Serenar, the 100mm f2 Canon, the 100mm f4 Serenar and the 135mm f3.5 Serenar. The 85mm and 135mm lenses are very good indeed -- very sharp at all but the most open apertures, with reasonably good contrast, although not what you would get from a more modern lens. The 100mm f2 is remarkable -- one of the better teles that I have ever used in a package comparable to the 90mm f2 Summicron. With lens hood, it seems enormous and is a big chunk of weight, particularly when mounted on a Leica IIIc/f/g (or should I say when a Leica IIIc/f/g is mounted on it). At f2, one really does have to use care in focussing this lens though. Generally, I prefer the slightly longer reach of the 100mm Canon to the Leica 90mm lenses. You can get the Canon 100mm f2 lens for about $300-$400. The 85mm and 135mm are commonly available for around $125-$150. My favourite of all the Canon teles is the 100mm f4, a curiously neglected lens whose praises I sing at every opportunity. Easily available for less than $100, this renders sharp images that have that plasticity or dimensionality that I like so much. This is one of the great bargain lenses for Leica that everyone should have.
