Subject: [Leica] Digital limits?

As our sensors get bigger - and this 11.1 MPixel CMOS array sounds impressive -
I have to wonder how close a digital sensor can get to film in terms of the
dynamic range of signal it can capture.

I know there are some industry types out there. Can we expect the current type
of technology to work as well as silver at some point or are there physics
reasons why CMOS/CCDs will forever be stuck in their sensativity?

There are many compelling reasons to make images on film. Now. I'm finding there
are far fewer reasons to make silver-gel prints although some of those reasons
are still compelling.

But the handwriting is on the wall: film will become more expensive and at some
point it may become the less capable medium compared to working in the digital
domain.

But I'd like to have someone who knows explain sensor physics.
