The GIMP bible, "Grokking the Gimp," makes no mention of this restriction. In my own case, I'm finding my hardware set up is the limiting factor. My poor old video card suffers mightily when I open a 50+mb tiff file. Aside from being free and independent of the Microsoft platform, the Gimp does indeed have some powerful editing tools. Its major drawback is the absence so far of color management, though work in this area is being done. Interestingly enough Corel has come out with a Linux version of its Photopaint9 application. I've downloaded it and installed it but am still working out some installation problems. It may be time to RTFM.
